After taping the other painted areas and the windows of the truck for
protection, the grinder is used on the rust mounds. At this time, care must
be taken to make sure the grinder doesn't get stuck(sending the grinder flying) or the
metal get too hot(causing warping).
The volcanos of rust have now turned into holes of rust.
The rust must be dug out, wire brushed, treated with a rust inhibitor to
try to prevent the rust from spreading any further.
The holes are then filled with bondo and a coat of primer paint is
applied. After drying, bondo is applied again to make sure the indentations from the
rust are filled in and the hood is level and smooth.
At this time it doesn't look very smooth, but with some tender loving
care, another coat of primer, and a little drying time, the hood will be ready for the
final coats of paint and color matching.
